Fashion Meets Jazz In Lagos

Something new is happening in Lagos as fashion and music will meet on the runway. Tagged Runway Jazz, the event will take place from April 29 to 30 at the Eko Hotel & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.

Afolabi Oke, group leader and saxophonist, Sweet Sound and convener of the event said Runway Jazz will be a harmonic fusion of Jazz, fashion and fine dining to celebrate UNESCO’s International Jazz Day this month.

According to him, April 30 0f each year has been dedicated to bringing together communities., schools, artistes, historians and academicians all over the world, to celebrate and learn about Jazz.

“The UNESCO World Jazz Day is about celebrating that genre of music, Jazz”, he explained. “It is about celebrating its root, future and impact. We want to raise awareness of the need for intercultural dialogue and mutual understanding. It is also about reinforcing international cooperation and communication which are the core principles of UNESCO.”

He further explained that in line with these principles, his company, Sweet Sound African Promotion in conjunction with Neo Mantra Ltd are pleased to present the Runway Jazz event as a contribution to the global celebration of Jazz.

“For us, Runway Jazz is beyond a show,” he said. “It is an experience that defines the impact of music on everyday life. It allows us to express our culture in such a way that we encourage peace and unity, first among ourselves as a people and then between Nigeria and the rest of the world. It speaks to the minds of artistes to challenge and channel their creativity into a great cause.”

Frank Osodi, foremost Nigerian designer and creative director, Brunor Creazioni, who is curating the fashion side of the show said lovers of Jazz and high end fashion should expect unusual creativity.

“We creating new edgy pieces with an African touch for the show,” he said. Lovers of Jazz and good fashion should come prepared to be treated to some of the finest designs in Africa.”

While corroborating Osodi’s comment, Nkiruka Oguadinma said the show is designed to show Nigerian culture in its entirety.

“Runway Jazz is created to show Nigeria culture, talents and products to all around the world. In so doing, recognise some of Nigeria’s greatest like Fela Kuti, King Sunny Ade, Ebenezer Obey, Victor Olaiya and Sir Victor Owaifo whose achievements on Africa’s music landscape both home and abroad have made them exemplary ambassadors of Nigerian music and symbols of our cultural heritage.”

In addition to the Sweet Sound band, other artistes billed to headline the show are; American Grammy award winner Kirk Whalum, a veteran smooth Jazz saxophonist who represents a unique class of artistes with a rich repertoire of sounds including Pop, Gospel, R&B amongst others. He will share the stage with some of Nigeria’s great musicians like Omawunmi, Yinka Davies, T Mark, Tosin Alao and others.

Furthermore, Oke observed that the event is not only about Jazz performance and fashion as there will be a Masterclass and mentoring session to be anchored by Kirk Whalum for music enthusiasts and students plus an exclusive dining experience with Whalum to wrap up the event.

“The event is endorsed by the Lagos State Government and UNESCO. We have various sponsorship categories: Diamond Platinum, Gold and Silver.  Partners stand to benefit a great deal from being part of the show.
